Probably Tai Chi, or some secret viking martial art being rediscovered by a 16 year old kid in his basement. But seriously - learn a combat focused (not sport oriented) martial art. If they do it in a ring, or it looks pretty when set to music, it doesn't apply.
This is an interesting question and the answer is - probably. However, normal humans can live up to 3 weeks without food. If the zombie infection creates a state of significantly lowered metabolism - that time could be extended quite a bit. If the metabolism shifts to an efficient wasting effect - zombies will get skinnier but live longer. The real question for us to ponder is whether zombies will drink, and can they get dehydrated.
The best way to kill zombies depends on the infection vector and unique physiology of the zombie. General consensus is that destroying the central nervous system is the most reliable method - this means some kind of head shot. If the Zs are living zombies, then severing the major blood vessels, heart or lungs will be quick but not instant. Severing the brain stem with a bullet, blunt, or edged weapon is probably the only guarantee of an instant kill. Even the total destruction of the heart of a living zombie will give that former person a number of seconds to continue their attack.
Yes, it's commonly believed that there are a number of ways in which this could happen. The most likely candidate would be a strain of infectious virus, bacteria, even fungi, perhaps even contracted by animal bite. Another way science can create a zombie-like effect in people is with certain pharmaceuticals. Certain drugs, like scopolamine (the zombie drug), have been used as truth drugs. In the correct dosages they remove free will and suppress memory.
Nobody knows for sure when the ZPOC will happen, but we know it's just a matter of time. Why not prepare now? Global air travel means that any infection with a short incubation period can get around the globe in days or even hours.
Zombies are mindlessly aggressive humans, or re-animated human corpses, who are driven by an infection -biological, pharmacological, technological or otherwise. This is a modern scientific view of the zombie, which has little to do with Voodoo or magic.
ZPOC is an abbreviation for zombie apocalypse. It's easier and faster to type, write or say. If you're not familiar with the term "zombie apocalypse" then this site should be a bit of a shock for you. The ZA or ZPOC happens when the zombie infection gets to the point when social chaos ensues. This may happen quickly or over time, depending on the vector, rapidity, and initial outbreak location of the infection. For example, if the outbreak is viral, with an incubation period of a few hours, breaks out in a major city, we would expect to go from patient zero to full-on ZPOC in a very short period of time - perhaps days.
After the zombie apocalypse there will be two basic groups of people - survivors and zombie poop. Amongst the survivors, there will be a special group, those who look forward to the ZA, those who are prepared, those who look to zombie hunting as sport. We'll call those folks Zombie Thrivalists (TM). As far as we know, we coined the term.
No, that's bullshit. All the rigamarole about the end of the Mayan long count calendar is so much male bovine fecal matter. In fact, the Mayans had multiple calendars, some going on into infinity, some going thousands of years beyond 2012. Also, it has been hypothesized that if one adjusts for the disparity between the Mayan calendar (more accurate) and the common calendar (Western/Gregorian which has silly things like leap years and temporally challenged February), the so-called "End" happened several months ago. We must have missed it somehow, did you? There is no indication the Mayans believed 2012 would be the end of the world. We do know the zombies are coming, and we don't know when. Could it happen on December 21st, 2012? Sure, but that would just be a coincidence.
If that were the case, our advice would be simple ... stockpile ammo and move into a tree fortress. However, if the infection is widespread to the point where society breaks down, you're going to have other survival concerns. Shelter, water, food, security and first-aid are going to be survival necessities that you can't take for granted. With the grid down, and stores looted you're going to want some skills. That's where we come in.
Is there going to be a (ZA) zombie apocalypse? Absolutely. And, it's going to be awesome! However, nobody knows when it will happen, or where the first breakout will occur, or what the specific infection vector will be. So, the best thing you can do is prepare!
The popular culture and Hollywood model of the zombie (being the recently dead walking the Earth) is highly unlikely. More likely is some kind of infection (also seen recently in film) that affects a large portion of the population. A virus, parasite, bacteria, fungus, prion - whetever, that has the ability to turn the infected into some kind of homicidal, even cannibalistic being is not just possible, but likely.
This article shows 5 different zombie infection vectors, but is by no means exhaustive.
In the television series,
The Walking Dead, (and we've read some but not all of the books), it seems like the infection is something that completely takes over the central nervous system to the point where it can reanimate a corpse.
